A Day for Giving Thanks   3 comments

A Time to Give Thanks

It comes to this day that, every year, we gather to celebrate the bounty in our lives.

For some that bounty is in a wealth of money, for some it is posessions, and other

tangible things.

For others, the wealth of their lives is counted in the love of their

families, the companionship of their friends, and in the hours of happiness

they share with those around them, and in precious, wonderful memories.

These are the true riches that will never fade with

time.  In this life I have had my share of these and

they are my treasures, riches for which I am most

I want to thank all of my friends for the companionship they offer, and all who give of their time

to read the sometimes crazy, obtuse, obscure, and amateur things that I write.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
  (Robert Frost)
Frost is one of my favorite poets and many times I try to emulate his style

The above picture is the first snow of the season.  Woke this morning to 11 degrees and 9in of new wet snow.  As evidenced in the photo, it was beautiful to see, but, at least to me, 11 degrees is NOT beautiful.  Well, I was ready for it and my trusty snowblower handled it nicely.

This wish I have for any and all who read any of my writings:

Sunshine on your face each day

The wind at your back in a storm

Peace in your sleep and dreams

And love in your heart each morn.

~ A Foretelling ~   2 comments

The day dawned with steely grey clouds and a misty drizzle.  All was quiet in ghe woods.  Trees were bare of their autumn splendor, standing like skeletal sentinels, guarding a dreary, barren landscape.  Rabbits and squirrels, and other small animals had retreated to their nests or burrows for shelter.  The brisk, damp air now became more chilled with the advent of a frigid wind freshening across the prairie.  Leaves on the ground rustled and scattered across the trail.  Then it appeared, drifting softly down from scudding gray clouds.  Snow filled the sky, and just as quickly covered the ground below…, a foretelling of the coming winter.

Under the soft subtle hue

Of a silvery full moon,

With spruce and pine a pillow,

A cushion of leaves for sheets

And a blanket made of stars.

There I will find sweet rest

And peace

Five Englishmen in an Audi Quattro arrived at an Irish border checkpoint. Paddy, the officer, stops them and tells them: “It is illegal to put five people in a Quattro. Quattro means four.”

“Quattro is just the name of the automobile,” the Englishman retorted disbelievingly. “Look at the papers: this car is designed to carry five persons.”

“You cannot pull that one on me,” replies Paddy. “Quattro means four. You have five people in your car and you are therefore breaking the law.”

“You idiot!” the Englishmen replies angrily. “Call your supervisor over. I want to speak to someone with more intelligence!”

“Sorry,” responds Paddy, “Murphy is busy with two guys in a Fiat Uno.”

The Autumn leaves drift by my window

(yes, they’re getting that deep out there)

I hear the chilly autumn wind blow

And feel the dampness in the air

So sad to see summer’s warmth go

Carefree days beneath the sun

Autumns leaves, falling, falling, falling

Lay like a blanket on the ground

In the distance I hear the calling

A soft, but chilling, bitter sound

As the Snow Queen rallies her forces

To commence another round

Of Winter

A Place Called Yesterday   8 comments

There is a place called yesterday

I passed it down the road

A place the heart can stop and play

And loose it’s heavy load

Memories live in this old place

And most find respite there

A friend, a sweet familiar face

Give sweetness to the air.

Best not linger there too long

What’s there is in the past

But like notes of an old favorite song

The soft melodies still last.
